Reading for enjoyment

P6 and P7 enjoyed separate visits to the library this week.  Each fortnight we go to the library and choose three books to enjoy.  Some of the girls and boys have chosen reading for enjoyment as their profile target.  They want to challenge themselves more by considering the readability of the texts that they choose.

If they want to choose a book to stretch their reading, they should be able to read any random page, finding 2-3 tricky or unknown words.  (We learned this during our paired reading training, which was inspired by the work of Professor Keith Topping.)

Five finger rule readability

Some pupils are also trying to explore different genres.  I have really enjoyed talking to each of them about the genres and authors that they enjoy.  Thank you to the library staff for always making us welcome and helping with requests and questions.  🙂
